Laurie L. Fajardo, MD, Receives HealthCare Hero Award from the Corridor Business Journal

Laurie L. Fajardo, MD

Laurie L. Fajardo, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology, recently received the first annual HealthCare Hero Award from the Corridor Business Journal for her heroic efforts in women's imaging. Chosen by a panel of local business and community leaders, Dr. Fajardo was recognized for her innovations and contributions to the field of digital mammography, and for introducing this technology to the state of Iowa in 2002. Her clinical trial in digital mammography helped establish which patients are best suited for this technique.

One of Dr. Fajardo's other research interests has been to develop more effective, but less invasive and less costly means of doing breast biopsies. She is also working on a system that will allow for 3-D imaging of the breast, which can potentially locate more breast lesions than traditional mammograms.

In addition to her contributions as a researcher, Dr. Fajardo was also honored for being one of roughly five women in the country who lead radiology departments.
