UIHC Radiology

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics: Department of Radiology: Teleradiology

Uses of Telemedicine

Potential and actual users of teleradiology systems include:

1. Radiologists on call. In this application, the on call radiologist uses a portable teleradiology receiving station at home. Patient images are transmitted from the hospital (or clinic) to the physician's home for immediate review. This allows instantaneous consultation of the radiologist referring physician.

Intensive care patient images taken in the Radiology Department can be quickly transmitted for review by the health care team

2. Hospital Physicians. ICU patient images taken (or developed) in the Radiology Department can be quickly transmitted to the ICU for review by the team responsible for that patient's care. Physicians or other health care providers at other sites who a re involved in an individual patients care, can also view the images.

Point-to-Point or LAN Transmission Network

3. Primary care, and rural physicians. A rural primary care physician can send patient images taken in the clinic to a radiologist in a distant location for reading and consultation.

Phone Transmission Network

4. Physicians requiring remote subspecialty radiology consultations. A community hospital radiologist can send a complete set of images to a remote radiologist who is a subspecialist (i.e. pediatric radiologist).
