The purpose of this booklet is to provide an entry level introduction to teleradiology for individuals with limited knowledge of this technology. This document includes teleradiology, a definition of components and connection configurations, uses, important equipment specifications, and costs. Specific product comparisons among commercially available teleradiology systems are beyond the scope of this booklet. A list of companies offering these systems, and a product comparison chart recently printed in "Medical Electronics & Equipment News" ("MEEN"), have been included for your reference.
Definition of Teleradiology
Teleradiology is a means of electronically transmitting
radiographic patient images and consultative text from one location
to another.
Costs
Costs for teleradiology equipment can vary from $15,000 to
$20,000 for low end equipment to more than $100,000 for high
performance systems. Typically a high quality sending station will
cost approximately $35,000 to $40,000 and a dual CRT
receiving/viewing station will run in the $45,000 to $55,000 range.
