Program
Information
History:
The Chest and Cardiovascular training program represents a unique opportunity for a formal and extensive 12-month experience in all facets of chest and cardiovascular imaging. Currently the Department of Radiology has 3.2 faculty in the Chest and Cardiovascular Section. This training opportunity will provide the trainee full exposure to all forms of pulmonary imaging including plain film radiography, CT, interventional procedures, and PET. Additionally, the fellow can expect additional training experiences in cardiovascular CT angiography, thoracic and abdominal aortic imaging, and cardiovascular MRI. Ample research opportunities and set-aside time for research is also a component of the training program. |
Duration:
Twelve months.
Prerequisite Training/Selection Criteria:
- Physicians who are board certified/eligible in diagnostic radiology.
- Permanent State of Iowa licensure.
- Physicians who are willing to commit to a full-time position for the 12-month training.
Goals and Objectives:
The primary goals and objectives of this fellowship program is to provide in depth hands-on training experience in all areas of cardiovascular imaging so that by the completion of the training period, the successful trainee will have unique expertise to function independently as a chest and cardiovascular radiologist in either private practice or academic medicine.
Program Certifications:
None.
Facilities:
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
Educational Program – Basic Curriculum:
The 12-month training period is fully dedicated to clinical training. Patient care responsibilities include:
- Interpretation of all in and out-patient radiographs of the chest
- Interpretation and oversight of chest and cardiovascular CT examinations
- Performing invasive procedures including CT and guided biopsies and needle localizations
- Develop unique expertise in the supervision and interpretation of cardiovascular CT exams, including coronary angiography, thoracic and abdominal CT angiography, pulmonary CT angiography, and cardiovascular MR.
- The trainee will be expected to assist the section in weekly and monthly duties, including Tumor Board, M&M Conference, and resident and medical student instruction.
- Approximately 20 percent academic time may be given upon mutual agreement between the Program Director and the trainee for research projects that will be intended for presentation at national level conferences.
Call Schedule:
The trainee will be expected to participate in two different call schedules. The first will be involvement in the departments general radiology on call rotation which includes general call duties approximately once a month. The fellow will also be expected to fully participate in sectional on
call responsibilities which will average one week per month. This subspecialty call rotation requires the trainee to participate in the interpretation of all in-patient chest radiographs, morning intensive care films, and overnight chest CT exams. Otherwise during this call period the fellow would be expected to be available by pager to provide consultation to issues relating to chest and cardiovascular imaging that may occur during the on call period.
General radiology call duties include supervising and overreading the on-call resident interpretation of plain film radiographs obtained between 5 pm and 8 am week days. Generally on call duties require approximately 2.5 to 3 hours of in-house duty during the week day reviewing and assisting the general diagnostic radiology resident on call.
Assurance for Compliance to Duty Hours:
It is anticipated that the combination of work and call duties for a chest and cardiovascular fellow will never require the fellow to approach the mandated 80-hour week limit. In general, the fellow can anticipate an approximately 40-50-hour work week.
Fellowship Evaluation:
The trainee will be periodically evaluated on 3-month intervals by the Program Director who will have access from formal evaluations from program faculty. Such evaluations will be shared formally with the trainee and issues or deficiencies will be addressed and duly corrected.
