Program Information

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has 900 beds and is closely allied with a 200-bed Veterans Administration Hospital on the same grounds. Both hospitals serve as major referral centers for the Midwest. The Department of Radiology consists of 64 staff physicians and 36 residents. Last year these hospitals performed approximately 291,000 radiological examinations.

We currently offer a one-year fellowship in Body Imaging with opportunities for participation in research and teaching and a broad range of clinical activities. Fellows rotate on Body CT, Ultrasound, GI/GU Fluoroscopy and Body MRI. The latter will include 3-4 months of primary responsibility in Body MRI/MRA but could also include experience in musculoskeletal, cardiac, chest, and neuro. Up to an additional three months will be flexible and chosen by the candidate if staffing allows. In addition, for each fellow we place on file, at least 2 written evaluations are done annually.

The Section of Body Imaging is an active service with nine staff members whose primary interest is adult body imaging, performing GI and GU fluoroscopy and contrast studies, CT, CTA, CT colonography, US, MRI and MRA, and body interventional procedures.

Our equipment is state-of-the-art, including two Siemens 16-Slice Sensations CT scanners (one devoted entirely to research), a Siemens 64-slice scanner to be installed in the next few months, three Toshiba Aquilions, four 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners (with one of these being a state-of-the-art GECVII MRI scanner), a Siemens 3T MR, six Acuson Sequoia ultrasound machines, and two recently installed angiographic suites.

The Fellowship includes hands-on experience with all GI, GU, and ultrasound procedures, as well as full participation in daily conferences and imaging rounds. Opportunities also exist for research and experience in specialized procedures, such as anorectal, and intraoperative ultrasound.

Assuming completion of residency training, the Fellowship carries a faculty appointment in the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. Fellows receive free medical and dental care for themselves and their immediate family at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Additionally, malpractice insurance is provided through the State of Iowa at no charge. The yearly stipend is competitive with other comparable programs.

Iowa City is one of the most highly educated communities in the nation, with a dynamic active civic and cultural life, yet below the national average in cost of living with the price of homes approximately twenty percent below the national average. Public elementary school students consistently scored well above the national average on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, and the high school average scores on the ACT are traditionally in the top ten percent of all schools in the nation. Nationally ranked Big Ten collegiate athletic programs offer a year-round calendar of sports events.
